SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
The final design solution employs a series of bay windows that extend the classrooms into informal reading or discussion areas. A tightly organized two-story plan is used to reduce costs while complying with the mandated Zone 4 seismic upgrade. A central, informal meeting area, or kiva, is part of the main entry sequence into the building. The library and music rooms face westward with a half-rotunda wall with windows, providing a stunning view of the city beyond. Brick accented and precast concrete sills, split-face concrete block base and lintels, and metal roofs over the bay windows were selected for the exterior materials to maintain continuity with the existing neighborhood and the tradition of the original school.
